Dental crowns are most commonly done after a large filling wears out or after a root canal treatment. The crown will be needed most if the hole made by the cavity is large. Dental crowns are full coverage restorations that can be used to cover a tooth that may be on the brink of breaking, or is too broken to be restored with filling.
Dental Crowns that are placed on a weak tooth prevents the tooth from breakage by providing strength and can help to prevent a cracked or broken tooth which is seen as more difficult to treat.Using Dental crowns can also provide you with a nice smile.
In order to restore a tooth with a crown, two appointments are needed. The first appointment will consist of removing any decay from the tooth and shaping the tooth to accept the crown. After that an impression of the tooth is made in order to create the crown. The crown is made of an all ceramic material, gold or usually of high strength porcelain over gold alloy. The temporary crown is worn until the second visit. During the second appointment the temporary crown is removed. The permanent dental crown is then adjusted according the tooth and then cemented into place.
