If you have a cavity in your tooth, your dentist might suggest 1 of 2 treatments. An Inlay or an Onlay.
What is an Inlay / Onlay ?
Inlay : A small filling that fits into the biting surface of a tooth
Onlay : A filing that covers a larger area of the tooth and is better suited to bigger cavities
Onlays and Inlays where previously made out of gold. However nowadays they are even made of tooth-colored porcelain.
A temporary filling is provided once your impressions are taken. When your Inlays / Outlays are ready, the temporary filling is removed and your Onlay / Inlay is glued on using a special adhesive.
Outlays / Inlays can nowadays be made at the the dental surgery using a milling machine called a CEREC.
